How an AI agent rents a domain
An AI agent rents a domain here through the MCP server at https://rentadomain.sh/mcp: it finds a name with search_names, reads the monthly price and the lease with get_name and get_lease_terms, and calls start_rent, which returns an approval URL for its person. The person opens that URL to verify their identity, sign the lease and pay the first month by card, the three steps an agent cannot take. Once the lease is active, the agent runs the name's DNS with an rd_ token scoped to that one lease.
No key is needed to search, price or read terms. Renting only, never sold, for business or other commercial use.
Step by step
- Connect: add https://rentadomain.sh/mcp to the agent's MCP client. The line for each client is below, and no key is needed to search, price or read terms.
- Find a name: search_names lists every name for rent with its monthly rent, and get_name gives one name's 12, 6 and 1 month rates and its renewal floor and ceiling.
- Read the lease: get_lease_terms returns the exact lease text the person will sign for that name and term.
- Start the rent: start_rent takes the name and a term of 1, 6 or 12 months and returns an approval URL, which the agent hands to its person.
- The person approves: they sign in with an email code and a passkey or an authenticator app, verify their legal name once with a government ID and a selfie, sign the lease and pay the first month by card. get_rent_status reports when the lease is active.
- Run the DNS: the person creates an rd_ token for the lease in the dashboard, or approves https://rentadomain.sh/mcp/manage as a connector with their passkey. The agent plans a change, then applies the plan. The first DNS change on a new lease is checked by a person before it goes live. MX, CAA, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, any wildcard record, any TXT at the apex, and any plan with more than 10 changes always need a person with a passkey or an authenticator code.

| search_names | Listed names matching a query, each with its 12 month rate and link. |
| get_name | One name: availability, the term menu (12, 6 and 1 month rates), floor and ceiling, the renewal formula, the appraisal line and the rent URL. |
| get_lease_terms | The lease text for a name and term, and the never-sell guarantee in one sentence. |
| how_to_rent | The exact steps for this agent and its human, with the URLs. |
| start_rent | Starts a rent for a listed name and term and returns the approval URL the human opens (email code, passkey, identity check, card); the lease is a fixed term, no refunds after activation. |
| get_rent_status | The state of a started rent: waiting, signing, active, taken, expired or failed. |
| rentadomain://terms | Resource: the lease template. |
| rent-a-domain | Prompt: walks the model from a search to the approval URL its human opens. |
An unlisted, unknown or already rented name is a normal result that names the next step, never an error.
Managing a lease
https://rentadomain.sh/mcp/manage is live with the lease and DNS tools: add it as a connector and approve with your passkey, or send an rd_ token. The same token works on the REST API at https://rentadomain.sh/api/v1: OpenAPI 3.1 document.
Questions
How can an AI agent rent a domain name?
Over MCP: it finds a name with search_names, reads the monthly price and the lease with get_name and get_lease_terms, and calls start_rent, which returns an approval URL. Its person opens that URL to verify their identity, sign the lease and pay by card. Once the lease is active, the agent runs the name's DNS with an rd_ token scoped to that one lease.
Can an agent rent a domain on its own?
No. An agent can find a name, read the price and the lease, start the rent and run the DNS afterwards. It cannot verify an identity, sign the lease or pay: its person does those once, from the approval URL start_rent returns.
What can the agent do once the domain is rented?
With an rd_ token its person creates in the dashboard, it lists the lease's DNS records, plans a change and applies the plan, through https://rentadomain.sh/mcp/manage or the REST API at https://rentadomain.sh/api/v1. A token works on one lease and carries the scopes dns:read and dns:write. The first DNS change on a new lease is checked by a person before it goes live. Once that first change is live, later changes go live as soon as you apply them. These always need a person with a passkey or an authenticator code: MX, CAA, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, any wildcard record, any TXT at the apex, and any plan with more than 10 changes. A token cannot rent, verify, sign, pay, cancel or change the term.
How much does it cost to rent a domain by the month?
Names rent from $150/month on a 12 month term, and every name's rent for each term is at https://rentadomain.sh/names. Terms are 1 month, 6 months or 12 months, billed monthly. The 12 month rate is the listed rate; 6 months costs 1.2 times it and 1 month costs 1.5 times it, rounded up to whole dollars. The first charge lands at activation, when your payment succeeds. After that the same rent is charged to your card on the same day every month. The rent never changes during a term. The lease renews on its own for another term of the same length, until you cancel or we give written notice. To cancel, tell us in your dashboard at least 2 days before the term ends. Cancelling stops the next term. It is not a refund. There are no refunds after activation and no proration for part of a month. There are no setup fees and no exit fees. Any sales tax that applies is extra.
Is the domain ever sold?
No. Renting only, we never sell. The renter gets DNS control of the name for the term, never ownership, a transfer or a purchase option, and the name stays registered to us for the whole lease.
Can the rent go up?
Never during a term. We review the rent once every 12 months, and a new rent only ever starts at a renewal, in a written memo with the math at least 60 days before. It comes from a published formula and nothing else: At renewal the new monthly rent is the current rent times 1 plus half of the year over year growth in search volume for the name's keywords, measured from an independent third party keyword search volume dataset, with that growth counted between 0% and 100%. So rent can rise by at most 50% at a renewal and never falls because of the formula. The result is rounded to the nearest $5 and kept between the floor and the ceiling published for the name. Your own traffic, your own business and your own growth are never inputs.
